Five students of the BS Speech-Language Pathology program of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences bagged the Best Curriculum Poster Award in the SLP International Network Summer School hosted by the University of Malta from August 18-25, 2024.

BS-SLP students Mariela Anya Sori帽o, Kathleen Megan Torres, Emilia Andrea Coronel, Robert Anthony Bertumen, and Vinz Adrian Chan were under the supervision of Inst. John Arden Romanillos, MHPEd, RSLP, who together showcased how 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区runs its BS-SLP program.

First offered in 2009, the four-year bachelor鈥檚 degree program involves at least 1,200 hours of supervised clinical training in various settings, such as the community and hospital. Such training endeavors allow students to screen, evaluate, and assess patients and help in individual and group therapy sessions. Apart from equipping students to handle concerns on speech, language, and swallowing disorders, aural habilitation and rehabilitation and augmentative and alternative communication are integrated in the curriculum.

Graduates of the program may proceed to take advanced studies in the fields of health professions education, clinical audiology, and medicine (all offered in UST), bringing with them sound training in practice and research. The Department of Speech-Language Pathology includes as part of its thrusts the conduct of research that will adapt and make culturally relevant SLP interventions, develop evidence-based practices, and promote professional growth and continuing education.

(UST-AMV COA) visiting faculty Prof. Yew Kee Ho from the Singapore Institute of Technology conducted a research training for the AMV COA faculty members, where he discussed current global trends in accounting and business research. The training, which was held from August 27 to 30, 2019, was divided into four subtopics, aimed to continuously upgrade the research competency and productivity of the faculty members of the College, particularly those under the areas of accounting and business education.聽

Prof. Ho discussed the current global trends in accounting and business research during the August 27 session. He started his discussion by posing the question 鈥淩elevance lost, relevance regained: What is one most important discovery in accounting or finance research in the last 30 years?鈥 In his discussion, he enumerated the top global accounting and finance journals, gave samples of top caliber and significant accounting research studies, and rankings of analytical, archival and experimental accounting research studies in the world. He also discussed the importance of research in the areas of accounting information systems, audit, financial and managerial accounting, taxation, and finance.

On the second day of the four-day research training, Ho discoursed on the guidelines for the preparation of publishable research paper. His talk was divided into two main areas: preparing for publication and the structured approach to publication. As part of one鈥檚 preparation for publication, Ho gave some advice such as reading the financial press and other accounting research conducted in other countries, talking with industry practitioners, and realizing one鈥檚 interest as a research subject matter. He also talked about the Pitching Research Framework, a structured approach to publication popularized by his mentor, Prof. Robert Faff of University of Queensland Business School. The framework provided the key characteristics of a research: structured, brief, simple, methodical, clear and focused.

Ho critiqued some papers presented by students and faculty members including the paper presented by Asst. Prof. Christine S.M. Alday which she co-authored with students, titled 鈥業mpact of Corporate Social Responsibility on Financial Performance of Top Philippine Banks.鈥 Student research papers presented were on selected business combinations in the Philippines, corporate social responsibility, financial reporting treatment of Cryptocurrency Transactions.

During the third day, the UST-AMV COA faculty members were joined by teachers from different accounting and business schools in the country for the training on researchers, panelists, advisers and teachers. Ho discussed the concept of a scholastic university and faculty. He emphasized the Knowledge-Skills-Digital Technology Framework for universities, how to balance academic rigor and industry relevance, the big data and data analytics roadmap and knowledge matrix, and funding matters for research, which for him, are the relevant information that a researcher, and research adviser/teacher should always consider.

After his lecture, two student groups presented their research papers which were critiqued by a panel. After the critiquing, Prof. Ho gave his comments on both the presenters and the panelists.

The last day of the four-day training was designed for a special dialogue between Prof. Yew Kee Ho and the UST-AMV COA administrators where he shared some best practices on research capacity building, enhancing competency, and increasing research productivity of accounting faculty members. He also shared some strategies for administrators in designing programs for its faculty members in terms of research efficiency.

Prof. Yew Kee Ho is a visiting professor of UST-AMV COA for the Academic Year 2019-2020. He currently serves as the Associate Provost, Skills Future and Staff Development of Singapore Institute of Technology. He is a Certified Public Account (CPA), Fellow Certified Practising Accountant (FCPA) of the CPA Australia, a Fellow Chartered Accountant (CA) of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants, and Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA), CFA Institute.

In line with its vision to be an internationally acknowledged educational institution of experts producing nationalistic and globally competitive Thomasian leaders in the field of rehabilitation sciences, the (CRS) sent four students in their 5th year, namely, Bianca Catherine Bongco, Rheine Christine Canlas, Zacharie Fuentes and Micah Tobia held for almost a month towards the end of 2018. They were accompanied by faculty member to St. Louis College (SLC), Thailand.

Various educational and recreational activities that included lecture series, community and clinical practice and cultural immersion activities were provided to the group. One of its highlights is the Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) program of SLC which helped the students, under the guidance of their faculty members, to develop their clinical reasoning as well as their creativity in diagnosing and treating patients who cannot seek medical consultation due to financial and transportation issues. A referral system was developed so that students can transfer patients to other healthcare professionals when the problem of the patient was beyond the scope of physical therapy practice. The experience allowed the group of Thomasian physical therapy students to further understand their roles in the communities.

The interns also obtained additional insights through lectures and demonstration by SLC faculty members specializing in their respective fields like the Voltja practice in pediatric rehabilitation, Schroth techniques in scoliotic patients and lymphatic drainage technique in patient suffering with edema. In return, Mr. Cruz also shared his expertise in the field of cardiopulmonary physical therapy to the students of SLC.

Also, four 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区students in their fifth year under the Physical Therapy program went on a month-long internship called the Global Internship Experience (GIE) that commenced on January 6, 2019 at the Mahidol University, Thailand.

The students, namely, Lia Carmella Silvestre, Gian Karlo Reyes, Diana Liezel Mosqueda, and Margaret Damatac, were accompanied by the College of Rehabilitation Sciences Internship Supervisor Ms. Fe Therese Chavez.

After the orientation and campus tour at the Salaya Campus of Mahidol University facilitated by faculty member Ms. Mind Pimpawee, the 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区CRS students were given the opportunity to observe and learn the practice of physical therapy in various disciplines including Pulmonary Rehabilitation at Sriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Community Based Rehabilitation with Prof. Sasithorn and Prof. Thanwarat. They also learned to use the Biodex Isokinetic machine and Evaltech, as well as the Gait Analysis system, in a physical therapy clinic in Mahidol鈥檚 Pinklao Campus with Prof. Yoswasin and Prof. Komsak.

In the community, the group had the chance to observe a house designed with innovations done for the patient using current available materials in order to maximize its function. During the second week, the interns were divided into two teams and rotated to different fields and observed cases on orthopedic, neurologic and pediatric cases. The 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区students also learned about hydrotherapy, fitness, and scoliosis.

CRS faculty member Chavez, was able to observe the different technologies that post-graduate students use for research. She was also able to observe the in-patient department and stroke unit at Sriraj Hospital.

The participants consider the Thai GIE as a wonderful experience being exposed to the practice of Physical Therapy in Thailand. They also observed that the set-up in the two countries were different, since they had direct access for Physical Therapy. They also realized that Filipinos should be more proactive in terms of their profession and be able to do much more for the Filipino community in improving the profession.
