Two students of the Master of Science in Microbiology programs of the Graduate School brought home awards from the 11th DOST ASTHDRP Graduate Scholars Conference held from September 26-27, 2023 at the Philippine International Convention Center. The 2023 edition of the conference bore a theme calling for a 鈥淩esilient, Unified, and Sustainable Philippines.鈥

Prince Nur-Hakeem N. Buisan won first place for his poster entitled 鈥淐ore vs. Edge Differentiation of Myxomycetes Community Assemblages in a Secondary Growth Experimental Forest in Southern Mindanao, Philippines.鈥 This study is under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Nikki Heherson A. Dagamac, Dr. rer. nat. Buisan鈥檚 paper attempted to contribute to the otherwise limited literature on the 鈥渦nderstanding of the dynamic influences of such factors on microorganisms鈥 and 鈥渧ariations in forest disturbance gradients.鈥 The moist chamber technique was used in the study site, Cotabato province.

Meanwhile, Ervinna M. Cruz won second place for the poster entitled: 鈥淕rowth-Promoting and Protective Potential of Fungal Root Endophytes Associated with a Pioneer Grass in a Lahar-Affected Area,鈥 which was supervised by Prof. Thomas Edison E. dela Cruz, Dr. rer. nat., FPAM. The study proved the ability of the 鈥渋solated fungal endophytes to protect the plant host against pathogens.鈥 The fungal endophytes were sourced from the roots of Saccharum spontaneum L., a pioneering grass species in a lahar-strewn environment.

Asst. Prof. Nikki Heherson A. Dagamac, Dr. rer. nat. of the Department of Biological Sciences was named the 2022 National Academy of Science and Technology Outstanding Young Scientist for Biology, as communicated by NAST President Acd. Rhodora V. Aranza on May 27, 2022.

Dagamac, who became a Balik Scientist in 2021, is beginning his career in his alma mater, where he now teaches. His contributions that were recognized dwelt 鈥渙n the biodiversity, distribution, and ecology of tropical myxomycetes, in particular, the discovery of 13 new records of myxomycetes that updates the number of species known in the country and in the development of the first bioclimatic distribution model of selected myxomycetes species in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia, in providing endemism as biogeographical evidence for global protists, and on the impact of disturbances on myxomycete communities.鈥

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Dagamac advocated for interdisciplinary researches, arguing that 鈥渁n approach to address research problems is best understood if there are more sectors and branches that can work together.鈥 Currently, Dagamac is working on several government-funded projects, including 鈥渢he ecology of wildlife species with a specialized focus on the endemic Tamaraw of Mindoro using camera trapping and habitat suitability modeling.鈥

A team of Biological Sciences researchers are currently conducting clinical and community-based testing of newly developed COVID-19 qPCR kits, which use nasopharyngeal swabs and saliva with or without mRNA extraction.

The team of Professor Pia Marie S.P. Albano, PhD, Inst. Reuel M. Bennett, Dr. rer. nat., Asst. Prof. Nikki Heherson A. Dagamac, Dr. rer. nat., and Asst. Prof. Maureen B. Sabit, PhD, are conducting clinical validation studies funded by MiRXES (Singapore), in collaboration with 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区and Singapore Diagnostics (Makati).

The use of the kits, specifically those using saliva samples, will eliminate the need for swabbers, thereby reducing time for the testing and the possible spread of infection, since the patients can self-collect the samples. According to the group, should the kits pass all validation tests, it can later 鈥渟erve as a cheaper alternative to gene sequencing to track mutations that can impact the effectiveness of vaccines.鈥 Albano, the lead proponent of the study, said that apart from confirming whether patients are Covid-19 positive or not, the positive samples can be analyzed for mutations, which 鈥渃an identify the variants of concern.鈥

Albano disclosed that while the kits were already tested using 鈥渃ontrived samples,鈥 further validation in clinical and community settings were required. They are thus 鈥渞ecruiting at least a thousand participants to see the kits鈥 diagnostic performance.鈥 If found to be viable, the group and MiXRES will apply for approval from the Food and Drug Administration, which will allow the commercial distribution of the kits across India and Southeast Asia later on.

Biological Sciences faculty members Dr. Nikki Heherson Dagamac, Dr. Cecilia Banag-Moran, and Dr. Reuel Bennett are commencing the two-year program entitled Integrated Floristic Assessment (INFLORAS), which will assess the comprehensive floral composition of the vulnerable coastal vegetation in San Fernando City, La Union. The partnership between 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区and the San Fernando City government was formalized on May 18, 2021, in an online event that also signified the adoption of the Memorandum of Agreement.

Three program aims to produce an objective and comprehensive assessment of true mangroves, invasive plants, native trees, and protists (myxomycetes and oomycetes). According to Dagamac, who leads the team, the plant-based assessments that they will perform 鈥渨ould help build policy recommendations [for] sustainable resource development for mangroves and its associates, native trees, and protists.鈥 The project may also lead to the crafting of conservation and risk communication plans and the implementation of related strategies by the local government units. Among the communication tools targeted for creation are educational info materials and local seminars.

The team will engage in field work, laboratory work, herbarium work, mapping/modeling, and diversity analysis in order to generate physic-chemical data, sampling protocols, risk perceptions, and economic valuation questionnaires.

The project will officially commence in January 2022 and end in December 2023 and is funded by the National Research Council of the Philippines. Technical support was provided by the CENRO-San Fernando City, La Union.
