The Research Center for Health Sciences (RCHS) mounted its tripartite poster exhibit featuring the research works of the academic staff of the College of Nursing, the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery on March 7, 2025, at the St. Martin de Porres Building lobby.

Faculty of Medicine and Surgery Assistant Dean Prof. Remedios D. Chan, MD, MHPEd, said in her message that the collaboration of the three academic units aimed to produce groundbreaking research works that push the boundaries of knowledge in hopes of paving the way to real-life solutions to society in the field of health sciences.

“When we combine our diverse perspectives and expertise, we are unlocking new possibilities and accelerating discovery,” Dr. Chan said.

RCHS is the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery’s research arm that envisioned itself as a hub for interdisciplinary, collaborative, and socially relevant research in medical education.

The University earned its highest rankings worldwide and in the Philippines in the last five years that it has been included in the annual SCImago Institutions Rankings. The 2024 edition of the SCImago Institutions Rankings saw 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区placing fifth among 15 Philippine-based research institutions, and 4987th out of 9054 research groups worldwide.

The Institutions Rankings covers research groups run by government agencies, hospitals, universities, private companies, and nonprofit organizations.

Given the 9054 institutions ranked in 2024, 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区landed in the 56th percentile overall. In the three criteria of SCIMago, 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区landed in the 23rd percentile for 鈥渟ocietal impact鈥, 54th percentile for 鈥渋nnovation outputs鈥, and 79th percentile for 鈥渞esearch performance鈥.

Since the SCImago Institutions Rankings began in 2009, 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区first landed in this list in the year 2020.

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Los Ba帽os, Laguna and the Diliman (Quezon City) campus of the University of the Philippines have been the top two Philippine-based research institutions from 2009 to 2024.

The top five Philippine institutions for 2024 are IRRI (2971stworldwide), UP Diliman (3151st), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST, 3334th), De La Salle University (4459th), and 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区(4987th). About 15 research institutions were ranked last year.

SCImago鈥檚 Institutions Rankings computes a 鈥渃omposite indicator鈥 that shows the combined score coming from three indicators: research performance, innovation outputs, and societal impact. These three indicators get measured by the research institutions鈥 web visibility.

These publicly-available Rankings <> are run by SCImago Lab, a Spanish consulting firm that is a spin-off from the group called SCImago Research Group. SCImago Lab runs analyses of scientometrics, scientific publications and web visibility.

SCImago鈥檚 Institutions Rankings also use the world鈥檚 leading scholarly database Scopus, which is also used by academic consulting firms Quacquarelli Symonds and TIMES Higher Education in their annual world university rankings.

The 2024 SCImago Institutions Rankings see the 鈥渞esearch performance鈥 criterion carrying a 50 percent score, 鈥渋nnovation outputs鈥 a 30 percent score, and 鈥渟ocietal impact鈥 a 20 percent score.

Among Philippine institutions, 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区was ranked 12th out of 13 groups in 2023; eighth out of 14 groups in 2022; tenth out of 13 institutions in 2021; and eighth out of 12 Philippine groups in 2020.

Banking on a review of Philippine occupational therapy studies conducted since the 2000s, Occupational Therapy academic researcher Assoc. Prof. Ivan Neil B. Gomez, PhD and co-authors Caroline Fischl and Michael P. Sy reviewed 鈥渃ommon areas, topics, and methodologies鈥 found in local occupational therapy research since the new millennium.

Using these as bases, the authors discussed the implications for using such in 鈥渁dvancing knowledge and practice of occupational therapy鈥 in the country. The authors also presented strategies that may be adopted to strengthen research efforts and establish a 鈥渃ontemporary, relevant, and critical research agenda.鈥

A researcher of the Center for Health Research and Movement Science, Gomez specializes in occupational therapy, psychophysiology, and evidence-based practice. Among his recent publications are 鈥淥ccupational Balance and Quality of Life among Hospital-based Occupational Therapists during the COVID-19 Pandemic鈥 (with Christopher Jeffrey B. Streegan) and 鈥淩eflections on the role of occupational therapy programmes on mental health of stakeholders鈥 transition to e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.鈥 Gomez is also the editor-in-chief of the Philippine Journal of Allied Health Sciences (PJAHS).

The book chapter is part of the new Routledge book entitled “.” It was edited by Michael Sy, Roi Charles Pineda, and Caroline Fischl.

Among 749 Universities across 92 countries, the University claimed its place in the inaugural Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2025 as the top Philippine higher education institution.

国产吃瓜黑料一区二区tallied a 39.8-42.5 score and secured its place in the 251-300 bracket.聽Moreover, it scored 54.7 in input, 66.7 in process, and 29.7 in the output metrics.聽

THE Interdisciplinary Science Ranking based their assessment in 11 metrics grouped under three pillars: inputs (19%), process (16%) and outputs (65%). 

Under the inputs metric, schools鈥 interdisciplinary science research funding (8%) and industry funding (11%) are measured. The measure of success (4%), physical facilities (4%), administrative support (4%), and promotion success (4%) make up the process criterion.聽

The outputs pillar evaluated the quantity of interdisciplinary science research publications (10%), its proportion among all publications (5%), utility outside the discipline (5%), publication quality (20%), and reputation (20%).

Within the University are research centers that allow interdisciplinary collaborations across the research interest groups, especially those targeting concerns laid down in agenda such as the Sustainable Development Goals.

Professor Valentin C. Dones III, PhD, Director of the Center for Health Research and Movement Science and academic researcher of the Department of Physical Therapy, was named the Outstanding Professional of the Year 2024 in the field of Physical Therapy by the Professional Regulation Commission, which conferred the awards on August 2, 2024 (Friday).

In a message to the Thomasian community, Dones called on Thomasians to 鈥渂e driven by a passion to serve others as a gift from God,鈥 to whom he dedicates the victory, along with his family. As a lifelong member of a Dominican academic community, Dones shares the importance of prayer and 鈥渙ffering every action as a form of worship.鈥 Dones said: 鈥淲e are called to perform our duties with love, thank those who support us, forgive those who have wronged us, and see every task as an opportunity to thank and praise God.鈥

Dones was nominated by the accredited professional organization, the Philippine Physical Therapy Association (PPTA), which vetted nominees based on qualifications, professional activities, character, and most importantly, contributions to the profession. Dones鈥檚 nomination by PPTA emanated from the nominations of CHRMS academic researchers Asst. Prof. Lyle Patrick D. Tangcuangco and Inst. Mark Angel B. Serra.

Dones is a research fellow at St. Luke鈥檚 Medical Center and is involved in two projects funded by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). His various research projects address issues such as hospitalized COVID-19 patient outcomes, hepatocellular carcinoma risks, hypertensive urgency and emergency, and the delivery of blended teaching in health science programs.

Also an innovator, he is the Chief Executive Officer of PainFree Management and Consulting, Inc., which is a grant awardee of the DOST-PCHRD and an incubatee of UST鈥檚 own TOMASInno Center, the in-house technology business incubator.

The Research Center for the Health Sciences (RCHS) inaugurated its Human Performance Laboratory on March 13, 2024 at the 5/F of Fr. Roque Rua帽o, O.P. building.

Borne out of a Department of Science and Technology (DOST) research grant, the said laboratory is built to ramp up research with state-of-the-art modern equipment and field rooms, as well as to assess the condition of the athletes, aid them in recovery after injury, and keep track of their performance.

RCHS Supervisor Prof. Consuelo G. Suarez, MD, PhD, FPARM proudly shared that the laboratory is the first of its kind in the country. Moreover, Suarez envisioned the laboratory to be a niche of research innovations where they can forge ties with researchers from various walks of life to gain a multitude of inputs, and then serve as a venue for seminars and workshops to empower medical and paramedical personnel, athletes, coaches, and educators alike.

Meanwhile, Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Rev. fr. Jannel N. Abogado, O.P., DThPatSc emphasized that the 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区research centers are guided by the anecdote that “science must be felt by people”, with the aim to give light to others. “We want research projects and our research programs to have an effect in the lives of people and the community […] we do so because this is our job, this is our role, this is our mission,” fr. Abogado said. “We constructed this laboratory because we know that the works and the technologies that will come out to this will be beneficial to people,” he added.

For Faculty of Medicine and Surgery Dean Assoc. Prof. Ma. Lourdes D. Maglinao, MD, the new facility aims to be the niche of groundbreaking research works that are envisioned to change people’s lives. “This center represents a symphony of expertise, a collaboration between the healers who mend and the coaches who push us to soar,” Dean Maglinao said.

The academic units that are primarily involved in running the laboratory are the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Engineering, and the College of Rehabilitation Sciences.

The Center for Health Research and Movement Science (CHRMS) of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences (CRS) of the 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区 (UST) is now in partnership with the JBI of the University of Adelaide. CHRMS is the only JBI affiliated group in the Philippines and is dedicated to advancing the field of healthcare through research and consulting services in various areas, including evidence-based practice (EBP), wellness and promotion, musculoskeletal research, community-engaged research, pain management, pediatric occupational participation, rehabilitation innovations, technological advances, and neuroscience and rehabilitation.

At CHRMS, we believe in the importance of using systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines to inform decision-making in the healthcare industry. EBP is a crucial part of our work, as it lets us use research evidence to inform healthcare decisions and improve patient outcomes. We aim to put plans into practice for the successful delivery and evaluation of EBP-based interventions. We seek to integrate EBP into healthcare policies and public health settings.

The JBI supports the CHRMS-JBI Affiliated Group through trainings and collaborations, strengthening our ability to promote EBP in the Philippines. Professor Valentin C. Dones III, PhD serves as the Director of the CHRMS-JBI Affiliated Group, while Mr. Mark Angel B. Serra, MOH is the Deputy Director. The team will advance the field of healthcare through research and consultation services.

Mr. Christian Rey D. Rimando, MSPT and Mr. Mark Philip P. Hernandez presented an e-poster in the 2021 World Physiotherapy Congress, held from April 9-11, 2021. The poster, entitled 鈥淭he Immediate Effect of M2T Blade in Increasing Hamstring Flexibility of Recreational Basketball Players: A Pre-Post Treatment Design,鈥 addressed the risk of hamstring injuries as a result of decreased flexibility, which can be addressed by myofascial release tools, such as the M2T blade.

The study recruited forty male recreational basketball players with (+) tight hamstrings and separated them into control and experimental groups. The study found that the M2T blade was 鈥渁 useful adjunct in physical therapy intervention in providing short-term improvement in hamstring flexibility鈥 and recommended further studies to establish the long-term effects of the blade.

On March 27, 2021, the 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区College of Rehabilitation Sciences (CRS) – Department of Physical Therapy and their counterparts from the St. Louis College (SLC) – Faculty of Physical Therapy, Bangkok, Thailand conducted a virtual International Physical Therapy Research Presentation, which featured proposals and completed researches by students of both universities.

The researches presented focused on various methodologies and concepts in Physical Therapy that were reviewed and tested on communities, particularly for the present situation. UST-led research proposals focused mainly on checking on various methodologies and their scientific soundness despite the situation whereas SLC-led researches explained a thoroughly investigated therapeutic method through a finished research experiment.

The presentations kicked off with a research proposal entitled “A Systematic Review on Online Well-being Interventions for the聽Physical and Mental Well-being of University Health-Allied Students”聽by Mikaela Azul, Mariah Edrianca Dalusong, John Edward Dela Cruz, Ma. Kelley Mangalili, Edric Ngo, Valerie Valerio, and Niels Viacrucis, who were led by Terence Buico. This was followed by another proposal entitled the “Effectiveness of Exergaming in Improving Well-being of Older Adults Living in Institutionalized Centers: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial Study” presented by Raj Bardonido, Janelle Catral, Stacey Evangelista, Arvin Labao, Kristine Ramos, Matthew Sabatin, and Keren Tuale led by Kian Marcelo. After both presentations, an open forum was provided for questions asked by participating CRS and SLC students and faculty.

These were followed by the research presentation by SLC entitled “Sustained Effect of Self-Static Pectoralis Minor Stretching on Muscle Length in Individuals with Pectoralis Minor Tightness,鈥 presented by Chanunchida Thaichaitum, Patthiya Jueboon, Ponchita Makradee. Another open forum was provided for questions and answers from both SLC and CRS participants.

The fourth presentation, entitled “Assessing Readiness towards Telerehabilitation 聽Among Older Adults with聽Hypertension In a Rural Community in Laguna, Philippines: a Cross-sectional Study,鈥 was led by Yalena Bergonio and fellow members Michelle Sy, Carlos Crespo, Hannah Lim, Lorenzo Mallari, Crissy Santos, Fernando Sto. Domingo, and Shermarie Zabarte. The presentations concluded with the proposal entitled “Experiences and Perceptions of Filipino Physical Therapists about聽Rehabilitation Practices and Services during the 鈥淣ew Normal鈥: A聽Phenomenological Study,鈥 presented by Roselle Bautista, Alliah Davalos, Juan Dizon, Yvette Marquez, Josua Olaya, Ivianna Ronquillo, and Epifania Velez, who were led by Erico Nuguid.

These researches would not have been possible without the guidance of the research advisers, Donald Manlapaz, PhD, PTRP, Catherine Escuadra, MHPEd, PTRP,听Archelle Jane C. Callejo-Tiuseco, MPH, PTRP, PT, Christian Rey D. Rimando, MSPT, PTRP, Ken Erbvin R. Sosa, MOH, PTRP, PT, Jordan Barbra P. Nava, MSPT, PTRP and Christopher G. Cruz, MSPT, PTRP of UST. Meanwhile, SLC students were mentored by Varavee Temprom, MSc, PT and Kornkamon Cheawthamai, MSc, PT.

Prior to the event, participants were welcomed with an ad from “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” where various landmarks and Philippine cultural displays were shown. As 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区hosted this first part of the series, students were given a quick virtual tour of the campus. This provided SLC students with a glance at the facilities and program offers of the university, as well as provided Thomasian students and advisers a quick trip down memory lane as they have yet to visit again the halls and walls of the campus.

The second part of the series, to be hosted by St. Louis College – Thailand, will be held before the end of April.

With the theme 鈥淎dvancing Research and Innovation in the New Normal鈥, the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation will celebrate Research Week 2021 through a series of webinars from March 23-27, 2021.

The plenary webinar will feature 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区Department of Biological Sciences Visiting Professor fr. Nicanor Austriaco, O.P., PhD, SThD, who will talk about the academic research during the time of the pandemic.
