Department of Speech-Language Pathology Chair Judith Damian, MS and academic staff member Russell Romero were in Antwerp, Belgium from March 13-15, 2023 to serve as speakers in the 18th Thomas More International Days event hosted by Thomas More University. The event鈥檚 theme for this year is 鈥淢ultidisciplinarity in Teaching.鈥
Damian discoursed about Healthcare in SLP and provided a broad overview of the Philippines and the health care service delivery in the Philippines.聽 A brief history of Speech-Language Pathology in the Philippines was discussed. The presentation showed the importance and relevance of including this 鈥楬ealthcare in SLP鈥 course for undergraduate Speech-Language Pathologist students in the 国产吃瓜黑料一区二区 (UST). This presentation was given to faculty members of the Thomas More Speech Language Pathology and Audiology program.



Meanwhile, Romero also presented to the faculty of Thomas More University his topic on Aural Habilitation and Rehabilitation in the Philippines.聽 He discussed the aural habilitation and rehabilitation landscape in the Philippines. He discussed the methods in detecting hearing loss in the country followed by different intervention procedures such as providing amplification and therapy. 聽Aside from this, the different communication options and its limitations for the hearing-impaired population in the country were discussed. Some of the communication options mentioned included auditory-verbal therapy, total communication, and manual communication.



A workshop carousel consisting of three (3) rounds of聽90-minute sessions was provided for 200 students at the St. Andries campus on the 2nd day of the event. Damian presented her workshop on the Clinical Evaluation and Management of Adults with Dysphagia聽 This workshop is an introduction to Dysphagia (Swallowing disorders) for Speech-Language Pathology undergraduate students.聽 The presentation provided an overview of the clinical evaluation as well as the management of adults with dysphagia. Meanwhile, Romero facilitated a workshop on Clinical Evaluation and Management of Children with Hearing Loss. This workshop introduced Speech-Language Pathologist undergraduate students to Aural Habilitation. An introduction on clinical evaluation and management for the hearing-impaired population was also discussed.
Damian and Romero, who both teach at the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, joined international speakers from Kenya and Sweden.
