Assoc. Prof. Rachelle B. Lintao, Ph.D. of the Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Letters presented her paper entitled 鈥淭ransforming the Complex Syntactic Structures of a Philippine Consumer-Finance Contract鈥� at the 13th Biennial Conference of the International Association of Forensic Linguists (IAFL) at the University of Porto in Porto, Portugal, held last July 10-14, 2017.
With the theme of New Challenges of Forensic Linguists, this international gathering of 170 participants from 26 countries all over the world served as a platform for the exchange of scientific endeavors and discussions on the advances, opportunities and issues relating to the interplay between language and the law.
In celebration of the IAFL鈥檚 25th founding anniversary, the conference also highlighted possible directions of the Association for the next 25 years. Assoc. Prof. Lintao鈥檚 presentation focused on discussing the nature and reform of the legal language particularly on the syntactic features of a Philippine bank鈥檚 credit card terms and conditions. Her participation at the conference was funded by the Commission on Higher Education.
